HPI WIL Student Handbook

5. Insurance, legal & OHS

Insurance
The UQ student insurance policy provides comprehensive insurance for enrolled students. Details can be accessed here.

Occupational health and safety information
All of the UQ Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) information can be found in the UQ Policy and Procedures Library (PPL)

When students agree to complete a WIL activity, where some off-campus tasks are required (placements or projects), course staff should provide basic OHS information. The industry partner staff should also provide basic OHS information (ie. fire exits and exit procedure, who to notify in the case of a safety incident etc).

  • How to report an incident: any safety incident a student encounters at a workplace should be reported at the workplace in question, but they may also report via the University online system.
  • What to do if you feel harassed: if students experience harassment, discrimination or bullying, they can contact a University officer for information and assistance
  • Personal safety & emergencies: always dial 000 in an emergency.

The industry partner will advise whether you will need to acquire a Blue Card to visit the placement location.

Ethics
Course staff will advise students if ethics approval is required and any other relevant information.

Intellectual Property
Students conducting WIL activities, whether considered a placement or not, should be aware of their rights regarding intellectual property (IP). UQ students own their IP, unless they assign it to another individual or organisation. If an organisation requests IP be assigned to them, this can then be negotiated; however, students should not feel compelled or coerced to assign their IP. Students are advised to seek independent legal advice (one option is UQ Union Legal).
