HPI WIL Student Handbook

4. WIL activity categories

Placement — (also known as clinical immersion, clinical placement, clinical practice, externship, fieldwork, industry experience, industry study, internship, practicum, teaching practice, work placement) is a course, component, milestone or other activity that gives students practical experience in the application of theoretical concepts and knowledge in an authentic work environment.

Placements are:

  • for the provision of experience to a student enrolled in a course or program at The University of Queensland; and
  • the experience must be a mandatory or assessable part of the course or program.

Placements include placements for credit and placements to fulfil program milestones.
A practical way to think about placements is that they are WIL activities that take place off-campus, on an ongoing basis, where students are producing work at the workplace under the direction of an industry partner.

Projects — may be considered WIL activities undertaken singly or in groups as an assessible part of a course. Projects are conducted in partnership with an industry partner, but in contrast to a placement, students conduct the majority of work on-campus and take limited direction from the industry partner.may be considered WIL activities undertaken singly or in groups as an assessible part of a course. Authentic Assessments — simulate a realistic workplace task, but are conducted on-campus and students take direction solely from University staff.
