2. WIL aims and objectives
As an aspect of the National Work Integrated Learning Strategy, and the UQ Student Charter, The University of Queensland is introducing a range of WIL programs in various Schools. These programs are designed to assist students to become creative and self-directed learners, entrepreneurial thinkers, and to improve the transition from university to work. WIL activities are designed to integrate theory and practice knowledge and give students a direct or simulated experience of the workplace.
WIL activities as applied within HPI courses aim to give students the opportunity to apply the relevant skills they have developed within their chosen discipline to a work focussed outcome. Examples of skills developed in HPI include: critical thinking, analysis, applied research, writing, time management, and attention to detail. Additionally, WIL activities provide students with an opportunity to practice skills often required in the workplace including: written and verbal communication skills, professional presentation, rapport building, initiative and entrepreneurialism, and independent and team based work.
WIL activities in HPI courses may include formal placements, optional WIL projects as a choice of assessment within a course, WIL authentic assessments, field observations, and applied undergraduate research.
