3. Roles and responsibilities
Students
Students should ensure they read all the information provided and understand all the requirements for a WIL activity before applying to participate. Any initial questions regarding WIL activities are best directed to the course co-ordinator.
Students visiting a work place for a short or prolonged amount of time should demonstrate a professional manner by:
- Asking about the workplace’s occupational health and safety guidelines and who to tell in the case of an incident;
- Ensuring you are aware of student insurance information;
- Using appropriate language;
- Addressing the staff politely and professionally;
- Communicating clearly in any written or verbal communications;
- Adhering to any dress or conduct codes that you are made aware of;
- Showing initiative and asking questions;
- Arriving on time and letting someone know when you plan to leave; and
- If a student can’t attend a pre-arranged meeting, they should let both UQ staff and workplace staff know as early as possible.
WIL industry partners
The staff of industry partner organisations have a number of responsibilities toward students, including:
- Providing a safe working environment;
- Advising if there are any child protection requirements;
- Making students aware of basic OHS information;
- Clearly outlining the activity requirements and how they will help;
- Providing basic guidance on how to complete the activity (dependant on the type of workplace and project);
- Advising if there are any formal ‘hand over’ requirements at the end of the project; and
- Advising how students may contact them.
Academic staff
UQ academic staff will provide the majority of guidance during completion of a WIL activity, particularly in the case of a project or authentic assessment. UQ staff have a responsibility to provide students with:
- Clear and comprehensive details of the requirements of the WIL project;
- Confirmation that a student has been accepted into a WIL activity;
- Assess the risk of a WIL activity;
- General OHS information;
- Insurance information;
- All required forms and documents;
- Assistance with communications to WIL placement partners; and
- Where possible, staff will arrange an initial group visit to a work place and, if possible, accompany student groups.
