Private Nicholas Permakoff had one of the most peculiar military careers of any soldier in the Australian Imperial Force in World War I. He and his service defy almost every Anzac norm and ideal. In this paper Martin Crotty will relate and explain Permakoff’s story – an unfortunate one that left him dead, disgraced, and dishonoured.
