Researcher biography
I came to philosophy curious about the nature of values. This has led me in two separate but related directions. Public Reason Theory: I am interested in how it might be that the institutions and conventions which structure a diverse society could be justifiable to all of the different people within that society. This question goes back at least to Hobbes, but has taken on new forms and new urgency with the arrival of the environmental crises, globalisation, and social media. Lessons of Moral Psychology: I am interested in restoring the neglected dialogue between moral philosophy and moral psychology, hopefully for the benefit of both disciplines.
I am currently involved in teaching PHIL2210 Environmental Philosophy, PHIL3630 Advanced Moral and Political Philosophy, PHIL3002 Philosophy Today, DATA7002 Responsible Data Science, HLTH3000 Legal and Ethical Principles in Health, and professional ethics modules for a number of other science and medicine courses. I have taught into many different courses in ethics and political philosophy at UQ and the Australian Catholic University, and am able to supervise work in many fields of ethical, political, and social philosophy.
