HDR milestone timelines

As a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) student, you will undertake 3 performance-appraisals in the course of your research thesis. The University of Queensland calls these performance-appraisals ‘milestones’. The 3 milestones are Confirmation, Mid-candidature Review, and Thesis Review. Each milestone takes place at a set time in your candidature.

For full-time HDR students, the expected milestone timeline (counting from commencement) is:

MPhil PhD

Confirmation

6 months

12 months

Mid-candidature

12 months*

24 months**

Thesis Review

18 months*

36 months**

* or 6 months from the preceding milestone due date.

** or 12 months from the preceding milestone due date.

For part-time HDR students, the expected milestone timeline (counting from commencement) is:

MPhil PhD

Confirmation

12 months

24 months

Mid-candidature

24 months*

48 months**

Thesis Review

36 months*

72 months**

* or 12 months from the preceding milestone due date.

** or 24 months from the preceding milestone due date.

The due date of your next milestone is always displayed in your student portal. You are expected to manage your time and prepare for your milestones. If you use an extension of a milestone or take leave from your candidature, the due dates of following milestones will extend accordingly. If you attempt and attain a milestone earlier than its due date, you will not be disadvantaged; the due dates of your future milestones will stay the same.

Requests for milestone extensions are submitted through your student portal. Refer to the Graduate School’s milestones and extensions page.

If you have questions about milestones and extensions, talk to your HDR Liaison Officer: hdr.hapi@enquire.uq.edu.au.

The expectations for each milestone are descibed on the School's milestones for HDR students page.

Thesis submission

Once you pass your thesis review, you are expected to submit your thesis for examination within 3 months if you are doing a PhD full-time or within 6 weeks if you are doing an MPhil full-time. If you are enrolled part-time, you are expected to submit your PhD thesis 6 months after thesis review or your MPhil thesis 3 months after thesis review.

See the Graduate School’s website on preparing your thesis for submission and examination.
