Richard Routley/Sylvan is widely regarded as having pioneered the academic subfield of Environmental Philosophy. Less well known are his contributions to nuclear thought which were mostly self-published from his office in the 1970s and 80s. Through ongoing archival research as the 2020 Fryer Library Fellow at The University of Queensland, an image of Sylvan’s nuclear ethics and politics as Antipodean--an oppositional stance that is at once universally anti-nuclear yet deeply rooted in place--is beginning to emerge.
