Since the creation of the French Foreign Legion in 1831, few British men joined it. However, during the Interwar period, British ex-legionnaires wrote many memoirs about their experience, the number of publications being disproportionate to the number of British men serving in the Legion. My research intends to understand the reasons that led these men to enlist in the first place as well as why they chose to write about their time in the Foreign Legion: did they write the myth or the reality?
