Melina Mercouri (1920-1994) was a famous actor, singer and politician. She was passionately committed to the cause of repatriation of the Parthenon Marbles. In this talk, the aim is to give a brief introduction to the career of Melina Mercouri, with emphasis on her efforts on behalf of the Parthenon Marbles and some of the successes she had. The second half of the talk will examine the Parthenon Frieze and assess some of the many interpretations of its subject matter. The Parthenon Marbles continue to resist definitive understanding in a number of ways.
