Scottish immigrant Alex Macdonald was involved in many of the industrial relations disputes and social movements within Queensland from the 1940s through til the end of the 1960s. This paper discusses Alex's emergence from 'battler' obscurity, cycling around the Eastern States during the depression years to becoming a Communist Party of Australia Central Committee member and Secretary of the Brisbane Trades and Labour Council.
