Interdisciplinary Symposium: Women in Medicine, Women of Medicine
WOMEN AND POWER RESEARCH NETWORK & MEDICAL HUMANITIES RESEARCH NETWORK
Throughout the history of Western medicine, women’s positions in medical and health practice have been precarious, both as practitioners and patients. Traditionally, women have been excluded from the medical profession, and as patients, women’s bodies have been treated as pathological, with most anatomical models and clinical control trials casting the male body as normal. This interdisciplinary symposium will focus on historical and contemporary women in and of medicine. The wide array of speakers and respondents will discuss topics such as female professionalism, women in mental health care, women in sexology, anatomical modelling, the history of midwifery, and women’s bodies in sports.
