Sustaining Persons, Grieving losses: addressing the pastoral challenges of the dementia journey
16 June 2017 2:00pm–3:00pm
Presenter: Di Crowther
In a hyper-cognitive, performance-orientated culture, dementia generates fear; stigma, relational isolation and suffering still accompany forgetfulness. This significant social issue calls for a Christan response to the theological and pastoral questions of care: 'For whom?', 'Why?' and 'How?' A pastoral approach is offered, emerging from cultural scholarship, on-the-ground research, and theological reflection on God's purposes in this challenging journey. Christians, individually and in community, are called to love, honour, comfort, and sustain one another - and 'one another' includes those who travel the road of forgetting and those who accompany them.
