Land of the Minotaur: The Bronze Age Palace Civilisation of Minoan Crete

The dominant feature of the Bronze Age Minoan civilization was the great building complexes we call "palaces" which were constructed in several places on the island of Crete. The largest and most notable of these was at Knossos. But were they really palaces? The problem with the Minoan civilization is that it is "a picture-book without words". Our knowledge of the Minoans is based almost entirely on what can be reconstructed from the material remains of their civilization. Written records are few and of only limited help to us. Minoan society was undoubtedly a very sophisticated one. But did it engage in human sacrifice, as some scholars have suggested? And what brought about the apparently dramatic end of this civilization?
