The Evangelical Church and Homosexual Practice

The Evangelical Church is deeply divided in its response to the issue of homosexual practice. But the heat generated by the debate continues to mask some fundamental epistemological differences between the combatants. The debate is carried on as if progressives and conservatives really do share the same socially embodied paradigm with the same standards and methods of rational justification. The very idea of the “incommensurability” of the two paradigms has not been seriously entertained. If I am correct in my assessment of the incommensurability of progressive and conservative paradigms, indeed it is like a fault line running through all of western Christianity, then addressing this issue becomes a matter of urgency.
